A group of Black educators from the Caribbean get together as they are concerned about the poor academic results of black students; Very few pursue higher education and the dropout rate is alarming.
Fast forward 50+ years, and having served more than 15,000 students the Quebec Board of Black Educators gathered on Saturday, April 9, 2022, to celebrate what started as a group of individuals wanting positive change in their communities!
The QBBE welcomed 160 or so guests to the QBBE 50th-anniversary celebration at the elegant Nordheimer of the InterContinental hotel, in downtown Montreal.
The guests were welcomed by our team of hostesses and to the sound of Warren ‘Slim’ Williams at the piano. After their registration, the guests were led to the cocktail lounge to mingle while being served appetizers and cocktails and to take their official photos in front of the QBBE Media wall.
As the attendees settled at their tables for the start of the 3-course dinner, the emcee Mr. Sean Henry welcomed the VIPs, sponsors, partners and guests followed by an acknowledgement of the land by the President of the QBBE, Mr. Alix Adrien.
The festivities were launched with a welcoming message from the president of the QBBE followed by an evening full of surprises to the delight of everyone present;
The highlights of the celebration were performances by an All-Star live band with the one and only Slim ‘Warren’ Williams as the musical director, a thought-provoking spoken word presentation by Svens Telemaque, notable guest speakers such as Ms. Dominique Anglade and Mr. David Birnbaum amongst many others. Scholarships were awarded to some well-deserving QBBE students; Shanti Clear Abang Taboko, Ciara Huggins and Keyshaun Johnson were awarded the Curtis George scholarships and Malaika Kakou was awarded the Dr. Horace Goddard scholarship and there were many wonderful raffle prizes and a 50:50 draw.
At the end of the evening, the guests received their welcome gifts and many chose to continue the festivities by staying for the after-party celebration, where the band took us back in time with an electrifying performance.
We are very proud to have held such a memorable event and wish to thank all who worked or volunteered behind the scenes for this extraordinary celebration.
